Dr. Andrew Dibner
The story of medical alert systems begins with Gerontologist Dr. Andrew Dibner who is credited with founding the medical alert industry 45 years ago. After introducing the first personal emergency response service in 1974, Lifeline is still the largest provider serving customers in the U.S. and Canada.
Dedicated to finding solutions to support the independence of older adults, Dr. Dibner and his wife Susan, were awarded the Charles A. Dana Foundation’s award for pioneering achievements in health and education in 1986.
After Dr. Dibner’s retirement in 1990, Lifeline was acquired by Philips in 2006. Philips Lifeline has since evolved his original patented invention adding a cellular communicator option, an AutoAlert automatic fall detection feature and mobile pendants with locating technologies.
